Mayoral Year

mayor_1977_001

Aubrey was Mayor of Newport in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Year of 1977.  During this year, he carried out over 700 engagements, most of them with his wife Mary.  Mary also attended a number of functions by herself.

Highlights of this year included meeting the Queen and Prince Charles twice, as well as the Queen Mother.  He also met the the Prime Minster James Callaghan for the official opening of the Tredegar Park to St. Mellons section of the M4 (although as the MP for Cardiff South East, Aubrey knew James Callaghan quite well).

In this year, Aubrey also awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Newport to the 104th Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers), the fifth time the Freedom of the Borough of Newport had been awarded since the 2nd World War, and the last recipients before Aubrey himself was given the same award in 1998.

mayor_1977Aubrey only used the official Mayor’s residence the Mansion House in Stow Park Circle for official functions during his time as Mayor, preferring not to uproot himself and his family from their home in Preston Avenue. This page highlights all known appointments attended by Aubrey during his time as Mayor.  Where available, these appointments have been supplemented by photographs of the occasions, most of which have been provided by the South Wales Argus.

Where these are not available, scanned newspaper or family photographs have been used.  Further photographs are available, and these will be added to the website when it has been established what occasion these refer to.  If anybody has any photographs or further information including any interesting stories or anecdotes from this year, please click here to contact us or by commenting on the forum page here.  If you forward any photographs, we would appreciate it if you could identify the occasion and date if possible, so that we know where to add this.  If anybody would like to help with compiling the details of Aubrey’s mayoral year, please contact us.

Help Wanted

The information on this page has been gathered from Mayoral Office appointment sheets as well as newspaper articles and South Wales Argus copy photographs kept by Aubrey and his wife Mary during their year in office.  This information includes a number of South Wales Argus copy photographs for which currently no occasion can be matched.  If you would be willing to help in gathering the missing information to enable this webpage to be completed, please click here to contact us.

Appointment sheets

Appointment sheets are missing for three periods namely 8th to 14th August 1977, 26th December 1977 to 1st January 1978 and 13th to 19th March.  The first of these, probably corresponded to a family holiday, and as such it is likely that there were no appointments in this week.  The 2nd of these corresponded to the Christmas period, and again it is likely that there were no appointments apart from those already noted.  The third of these is probably missing.  It is likely that these records could still be available from the Mayor’s office in Newport, and this has not been checked.  In addition, a number of appointments were made after the official appointment sheet was issued.  Some of these were added by hand in Aubrey’s or Mary’s writing, most of which can’t be deciphered, although with help, it may be possible to work out what these say.  Again, the Mayor’s office may also have more details on these missing appointments.

South Wales Argus Photographs

It is likely that original photographs of Aubrey’s mayoral year are still kept by the South Wales Argus.  These would not only provide a full photographic record of this year, but may also enable individual photographs to be matched to an occasion.  No contact has been made with the South Wales Argus about these.
